What Is a Licensed Product?
What is a licensed product?
A licensed product is one that uses a character, brand or design under written permission from the rights holder. The licence defines which character may be used on which product group, in which country and for how long. Unlicensed products copy the character without the rights holder's knowledge or approval.
Romanson products are licensed
Romanson car air fresheners and neck pillows are offered under a Warner Bros. Consumer Products licence. The DC characters in the collection (Batman, Superman, Joker, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman), the Looney Tunes characters (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Tasmanian Devil, Yosemite Sam) and Tom and Jerry are all used with the rights holder's permission.
How can you tell a product is licensed?
- The packaging carries the copyright notice (© and ™) together with the licence information.
- The character artwork stays true to the original design: colours, proportions and logo use are not distorted.
- The seller states clearly that the product is licensed and issues an invoice for the sale.
Why it matters
In a licensed product the use of the character is legally permitted and the product goes through the licensor's approval process. With unlicensed products there is both a copyright infringement and no clarity about how and from what the product was made.
